"...so you do the side salads here, that's your job, and the toast in the toaster if your doing an omelet or something, and you use this butter, it's running on purpose, it's clarified, so you bush it on with the paint brush there and so to make a salad...." The woman was rattling things off quickly and Devon kept a notebook as best he can, relieved that there were also little signs on the wall about how to make common things. Like the difference in what went on the smaller dinner salads.
The cafe was slow and Devon was getting his waiters training. He was shown how to write a ticket, the codes to use, how to use the register. For the first few days he'd be just bussing tables while he worked on the remembering the menu and getting into the flow of things since he'd never worked in food before.
"You get one meal a day, but don't go ordering the steak or whatever, and all the coffee and soda you can drink, but you have to pay for the Red Bulls and shit." She glanced at her watch. "In fact, you take a lunch now. My boyfriend is here and I want to eat with him. Don't forget to mark it off on your time card."
"Sure, OK." Devon agreed and followed her to the time card rack and put 10:20 am on the card for 'out'.
"Then just tell Jake what you want to eat and he'll make it." She leaned over the counter. "JAKE, club sandwich, sweet tater fries!"
"That sounds good, can I have the same?" Devon asked.

Jacob had been working hard all morning making the various food and calling them out and cheering his staff up. It had been hard work in the kitchen for a few days but the new guy Devon wasn't quite prepared to get into that heavy stuff just yet.
"Two Club sandwish and sweet tater fries comin' up!"
He called back and called out to the kitchen staff. He himself went to the bread and fixed that while the fries were getting done for them. This was the first rush of the day since it was quite slow during evenings.
And since the breakfast rush was over by now he could breathe out a bit more now. The last takes were for the staff and then half the staff got lunch while the other worked and vice versa. This time it was Jacob's turn to get the late lunch but he always served his co-workers before he took lunch himself.
Personally he took the chicken sallad and came up with the two plates in his left hand and his own in the right and placed them on the counter along with the fries on the side.
"Two club sandwish and sweet tater fries"
He repeated and smiled. That Devon kid seemed a little unsure of himself and as the loving father he was he couldn't help but feel for the guy.
"Hey, Devon is it? why don't you join me on the outside in the sun for a while? To get out of the smell of the kitchen and the steam of the dishwasher for a while"
Jacob said with a smile and waved Devon along to the back door and showed him to the staff area where they could sit and eat in private where no customers could see them.
"Have a seat, friend and relax in the warm sun and smell the green!"
He said with a wink and placed his plate on the table and took out two bottles of coke from under his arms along with a knife and a fork for both of them. Jacob sat down in one of the chairs next to the table and looked Devon over.
"Is everything alright, friend? You seem a bit troubled, is the work hard for you?"
Jacob asked and poured some rodeisland on the sallad as he spoke.

"Nope, everything is fine." Devon dropped down into his seat and shook out a napkin. "Just trying to get the rhythm of it all." He grinned and a dimple flashed. "You know, the back beat. I never realized how much the whole thing was like a dance, if the waiter is really good at it."
He munched on a fry and decided not to salt them. Unlike regular fries these were slightly sweet and didn't need the added bite of salt.
"Most of the jobs I had before were like file clerk and yard work." He admitted. "But I'm picking it up, slowly but surly."
He didn't mention that the food wasn't entirely unfamiliar, but when his dancer sister ate all he did was make fun of it. She'd get a hoot to find out he was actually eating it now. "Anyway, " he said as he picked up his sandwich to take a bite. "This will fit in great with my class schedule.
