(blended)
Sissy entered the Blue Heron and waved over the waitress. Normally it was seat yourself, but as one of the few places that she could go into, since Krenshaw's and the hotel bar were closed to her, she didn't want to abandon the place just because some stupid brunette worked there.
"Is Devon working today?" She asked the blonde waitress woman.
"Yeah," Tina answered brightly, with a grin. Devon had gotten pretty popular pretty quickly and was cleaning up on tips. "You want his section?"
"No, I want to avoid his section, where else is there to sit?"
At Sissy's snappy tone the Tina could smell hot gossip just waiting to found out. "Sure, come with me, I'll put you in my section."
But Devon saw her and frowned as the taller blonde waitress lead the slim woman away from where he was delivering an order to the far corner of the restaurant. He tapped his fingers against the black waiters apron he wore thoughtfully before smiling at the group. "I'll be taking a break now, so if there's anything else you need before I go?" He offered.
He ducked into the kitchen and hung his apron up on a hook. "I'm taking my lunch, ok?" He asked Tina, the other waitress, when she followed him in.
"Sure," Tina smiled knowingly. "Just be back before noon."
But instead of going out into the cafe, like she thought he would, Devon went out the alley door. "The plot thickens," Tina said to Jake, the cook. The black man looked puzzled, but uninterested as he started on a new batch of orders.
Once out in the street Devon broke out into a run and headed home. He jogged up the three flights of stairs and panting lightly unlocked the door to the apartment. Within ten minutes he was back in the cafe and standing over Sissy's table. She was not amused when he dropped a brown paper lunch bag in front of her.
"You're confused." She looked up at him annoyed. "I haven't ordered anything yet, and I didn't order anything to go."
"But it's yours." Devon said firmly.
Sissy opened the bag and looked in. The panties she'd kicked into Devon's room when she'd been with Rave where in the bag. She rolled it up into a small ball and threw it into her purse.
"Thanks. Bye." She said pointedly.
Instead of leaving though he dropped down in the chair across from her, crossing his arms on the table and leaning forward so he could talk quietly without being overheard. "Actually, I think we should talk."
"I'm not allowed to talk to you." She didn't like where this was going. He was supposed to be passive, wasn't he? Not confronting her in a public place like this. Or maybe being in public gave him some sort of power. It was annoying.
"No, you're not supposed to touch me. That's not the same as talking." He told her, confirming that he'd been awake, at least for a little while, on the night in question.
She leaned forward as well, now, with a hard glitter in her eyes, so that she could speak just as quietly back at him. "Which is a good thing for you, because I seriously would like to jam this fork right into your face right now. This is the only place I can go to eat, and you're ruining it for me."
"Well, from what I've heard about you and seen, that's not too much of a leap for you." Devon replied, just as quietly and just as earnestly. "I don't think you're good for Rave, I think you're going to drag him back down to where he's spent the last year trying to crawl out of."
"Shut the fuck up. You don't even really know him, too scared to see yourself in that mirror to look. I'm not. And he's not. He's got you up on some altar or something and you won't even let him touch you. Such a hypocrite. You're just a shit bag like me. You get what you need from him, and he gets what he needs from me because you..." Sissy sat up as Tina returned.
"Ready to order?" She asked brightly, noting the tension between the two and trying to figure out the vibe they had going. Devon didn't smoke, and hardly ever even had a beer, so it couldn't be drugs... must be sex. But somehow Devon didn't strike her as Sissy's type, and Devon wasn't acting like someone chasing tail now.
"Chef Salad, iced tea, strawberry shortcake." Sissy made her order as if she was defying a court order, glaring at Devon the entire time with her hazel eyes.
"Sure thing! Devvie?" Tina asked.
"No thanks." He waited until Tina retreated before staring at Sissy coolly. "I don't need to fight with you, I just want what's best for Rave."
"I do want to fight with you, because you don't want him. And that's very stupid of you. He's better than you. He's better than me. And someday he's gonna wake up to that and leave both of us. And you'll have nothing but shit in your mouth and regrets, and I'll laugh at you, because I had everything you threw away. Even if just for a little while. Now go away, before I do something stupid to make him mad at both of us."
Devon nodded and stood.
"Battlelines are drawn then." He said.
"They are. I hate you." She shrugged and then smiled, ever the actress.
